abstract = {The present study investigates the linear and non-linear optical and magneto-optical properties of TeO2–BaO–Bi2O3 (TeBaBi) glasses prepared by the conventional melt-quenching technique at 900 °C. Prepared glass composition ranges across the whole glass-forming-ability (GFA) region focusing on mutual substitution trends of constituent oxides, where TeO2: 55−85 mol.%, BaO: 10−35 mol.%, Bi2O3: 5−15 mol.%. Studied glasses exhibit high values of linear (n 632 ≈1.922−2.084) and non-linear refractive index (n 2 ≈1.63–3.45×10−11 esu), Verdet constant (V 632 ≈26.7−45.3 radT−1m−1) and optical band gap energy (E g ≈3.1−3.6 eV). The introduction of TeO2 and Bi2O3 results in increase of both linear/non-linear refractive index and Verdet constant, with a more pronounced influence of Bi2O3. Measured spectral dispersion of refractive index and Verdet constant were used for estimation of magneto-optic anomaly parameter (γ≈ 0.71–0.92), which may be used for theoretical modeling of magneto-optic response in diamagnetic TeBaBi glasses. Additionally, the properties of the prepared TeBaBi glasses were directly compared to those of the TeO2–ZnO–BaO glass system, which was prepared and characterized under similar experimental conditions. The compositional dependence of the refractive index in both glass systems was described using multilinear regression analysis, demonstrating high correlation and uniformity of estimation across the entire GFA region. This makes them highly promising for precise dispersion engineering and construction of optical devices operating from visible to mid-infrared spectral region.},

$$4fleftrightarrow 4f$$
transitions, the field lacks standardized computational methodologies for precise and reproducible parameter determination. LOMS integrates three key innovations: (1) automated computation of JO parameters, transition probabilities, branching ratios, and theoretical radiative lifetimes, (2) a dynamically expanding database of experimentally validated parameters enabling direct comparison between computed and empirical results, and (3) a novel Combinatorial JO (C-JO) analysis algorithm that systematically identifies optimal absorption band combinations to ensure reliable parameter extraction. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate how this computational framework enables rapid screening of spectroscopic parameters, allowing researchers to predict optical properties with enhanced reliability. By combining automated analysis with experimental validation through its integrated database, LOMS.cz establishes a standardized platform for accelerating the discovery and optimization of rare-earth-based photonic and optoelectronic materials.

abstract = {The need for high-power, high-intensity laser facilities has driven the scientific community to develop optics capable of withstanding higher fluences. The main challenge in increasing power levels is the limited damage threshold of optics. In this paper, we report the laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) of aluminum coatings deposited via magnetron sputtering. Aluminum coatings (150 nm) were investigated as 45° s-polarization mirrors, a geometry widely employed for beam steering in high-power laser systems. The coatings were produced using three plasma techniques: direct-current (DCMS), radiofrequency (RFMS), and high-power impulse (HiPIMS). Our results show that the RFMS coating is rougher than the DCMS and HiPIMS coatings, which affects its reflectance efficiency (at 45° in s-polarization), even at 1060 nm, decreasing from 96% for DCMS and HiPIMS to 91% for RFMS. 1k-on-1 LIDT tests using a femtosecond laser beam (110 fs) at 1060 nm demonstrate that coatings deposited by HiPIMS and DCMS withstand higher fluences (0.260 J/cm2) compared to RFMS (0.112 J/cm2). Finally, the LIDT performance was compared with the Functional LIDT (F-LIDT), defined as the incident fluence at which the reflected beam decreases by less than 5%. In this study, we observed a discrepancy between the 1k-on-1 LIDT and the F-LIDT values for DCMS and HiPIMS. The F-LIDT for DCMS was higher (0.288 J/cm2) than that of HiPIMS (0.232 J/cm2), which may be partly attributed to the larger crystallite size observed in DCMS. Additionally, the potential use of the HiPIMS power supply mode for developing high-performance optical coatings is discussed. },

Recent developments in photonic topological phases have revealed that protected edge modes can emerge not only from global topological invariants, but also from symmetry-enforced polarization mismatches between distinct bulk phases. In this work, we investigate the capabilities and limitations of a square-lattice (C
4 -symmetric) photonic crystal (PC) composed of a single dielectric material that supports interface-localized modes at the boundary between regions characterized by distinct obstructed atomic limits (OALs). These modes are confined to a common band gap and exhibit high transmission, even in the presence of structural perturbations. Our analysis reveals that the interface modes are stabilized by a mismatch in the position of Wannier centers between the two adjoining crystals. We demonstrate nearly lossless transmission around sharp turns and through localized defects, though the robustness depends asymmetrically on the side of perturbation, reflecting the partial nature of the protection. We also show that increasing the number of PC periods surrounding the interface enhances both modal confinement and spectral stability. These findings establish polarization mismatch between OALs as a practical and fabrication-compatible mechanism for engineering robust photonic transport in C
4 -symmetric systems. },

abstract = {A systematic study of the doping ability of the TeO2–ZnO–BaO glassy system with Er3+ ions is presented to achieve strong Stokes/upconversion photoluminescence (UPL) emission and to determine the optimal experimental conditions for conducting Judd–Ofelt (JO) analysis in Er-doped materials using the newly introduced Combinatorial JO analysis in this work. Selected glassy samples across the TeO2–ZnO–BaO glass-forming region following the concentration trends of each constituent oxide were uniformly doped with 0.2 mol. of Er2O3 but only those with high BaO content were found to be amorphous and optically homogenous. These samples exhibit strong photoluminescence (m, m) and UPL emission from visible to near-infrared spectral region. The intensities of Er3+ intra-4f electronic transitions were calculated on the basis of classical JO theory with derived phenomenological parameters. Combinatorial analysis was introduced and employed to calculate JO parameters using all observed absorption bands and their mutual combinations. The presented results then enable the identification of critical absorption band combinations necessary for accurate JO analysis in Er3+-doped materials, ensuring consistent and reliable outcomes. Furthermore, these findings facilitate the recognition of suboptimal experimental conditions for performing JO analysis in other materials containing Er3+ ions.},

abstract = {The glass-ceramics samples were prepared via controlled heat treatment of precursor glass synthesized using the standard melt-quenching method. The glass composition (in mol.%) was 14.3Na2O–35.7ZnO–49.4SiO2–0.6 Al2O3 and the annealing temperatures were varied at 750, 800, 850 and 900 °C. X-ray diffraction measurements identified the presence of several crystalline phases, including Na2ZnSiO4, triclinic Zn2SiO4, and rhombohedral Zn2SiO4 (willemite), with their formation dependent on the annealing temperature. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the presence of crystalline phase nanoparticles with a size of 10–30 nm, where increased annealing temperatures resulted in a higher number of nanoparticles and reduced particle sizes. The optical, scintillation and luminescence properties of prepared glass and glass-ceramics were investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry and using the time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy, revealing a decrease in refractive index and chromatic dispersion with higher annealing temperatures. The intense UV emission peaking at around 350 nm, overcoming the standard Bi4Ge3O12 scintillator intensity by more than 500 %, for all the samples was discovered under the X-ray excitation (40 kV). The bandgap of willemite nanoparticles was measured at approximately 205–220 nm and the corresponding scintillation decay with leading component in sub-nanosecond scale was detected. These findings highlight the potential of Zn2SiO4-based glass-ceramics, particularly those containing willemite nanoparticles, as promising materials for advanced distributed radioluminescent sensors and fast scintillation applications. The impact of annealing conditions on the material's structural and optical properties is discussed in detail.},

abstract = {Copper-doped Ge25Se75 thin films were deposited via spin-coating using anhydrous copper(I) or copper(II) chloride precursors to examine the effects of Cu oxidation states on film properties. The solution processing offered a cost-effective route with a mass production potential of perspective Cu-doped chalcogenide materials. The Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques confirmed the Cu incorporation at its targeted concentration (5 at.%). The XPS also revealed a reduction of Cu2+ to Cu+ oxidation form, presumably already in the solution phase. Optical characterisation revealed a redshift in the bandgap due to Cu-Se bond formation while annealing at 210 °C led to partial crystallisation, forming CuGeSex-like phases. The combination of wet etching with electron beam lithography and optical holography showed a significant increase in the stability of copper-doped material. Similarly, the thermoplasticity of copper-doped samples was affected as the hot embossing temperature dramatically shifted towards higher temperatures. However, despite having the same Cu+ oxidation state, the selected copper precursor still significantly influenced the majority of studied phenomena. These findings prove that Cu doping in the solution phase modifies the optical, mechanical and potentially electrical properties of Ge25Se75 thin films, making them viable for resistive memory or high-temperature photonic applications.},

abstract = {In this work, we present a comprehensive theoretical evaluation of Judd-Ofelt (JO) analysis for thulium-doped alumino-silicate glass in a wide range of compositions. The optical fiber preforms containing 5–10 mol. % Al2O3 and 0.1–1.3 mol. % Tm2O3 were prepared via the MCVD method combined with nanoparticle doping. The absorption spectra were measured, the absorption cross sections were evaluated and Judd-Ofelt (JO) analysis was carried out. The JO intensity parameters were found in the ranges Ω2 = (6.1–6.6)∙10−20 cm−2, Ω4 = (2.3–2.9)∙10−20 cm−2 and Ω6= (1.0–1.5)∙10−20 cm−2. These JO parameters, along with the calculated transition probabilities, branching ratios and radiative lifetimes showed relatively small variations across all measured samples. The calculated spectroscopic parameters may thus be used in theoretical calculations and simulations for materials in a wide range of compositions. Furthermore, the calculated radiative lifetime of the first excited level, 3F4, was around 4 ms for the nanoparticle-doped preforms. The fluorescence lifetime was then measured and found to decrease from 0.9 ms to 0.7 ms with increasing concentration, providing values of quantum efficiency in the 17–22 % range. These values are significantly higher than 10 % determined for a reference solution-doped optical fiber preform and from literature, demonstrating the beneficial contribution of the nanoparticle doping method on the resulting quantum efficiency.},

abstract = {The present study investigates the glass-forming ability (GFA), structural, thermal, and optical properties of the TeO2–BaO–Bi2O3 (TeBaBi) glass system, focusing on the mutual substitution trends of its constituent compounds. Prepared glasses were synthesized by the melt-quenching method at 900 °C and the GFA was extended by chemical compositions with lower TeO2 (55–85 mol.%) and higher Bi2O3 (5–15 mol.%) content via optimization of the synthesis process. The introduction of BaO and/or Bi2O3 results in the increase of the glass transition temperature (Tg≈327–384°C), molar volume (Vg≈28.9–33.1cm3mol−1) and optical basicity (OB≈0.97–1.03). Prepared TeBaBi glasses exhibit satisfactory thermal stability and wide spectral region of optical transparency from 0.4–6.5 μm with observed narrowing of optical window with higher TeO2 content. Compositional evolution of Tg may be described for the TeBaBi glasses using multilinear regression analysis with high correlation (r≥0.995) across the whole GFA region. The structure of studied TeBaBi glasses was investigated by Raman scattering and directly compared to the TeO2–ZnO–BaO (TZB) glass system prepared and characterized under identical conditions. Structural analysis revealed a similar degree of internal glass structure transformation regardless of whether a divalent zinc cation or trivalent bismuth cation is present.},

abstract = {Abstract Magnetic skyrmions, topologically-stabilized spin textures that emerge in magnetic systems, have garnered considerable interest due to a variety of electromagnetic responses that are governed by the topology. The topology that creates a microscopic gyrotropic force also causes detrimental effects, such as the skyrmion Hall effect, which is a well-studied phenomenon highlighting the influence of topology on the deterministic dynamics and drift motion. Furthermore, the gyrotropic force is anticipated to have a substantial impact on stochastic diffusive motion; however, the predicted repercussions have yet to be demonstrated, even qualitatively. Here we demonstrate enhanced thermally-activated diffusive motion of skyrmions in a specifically designed synthetic antiferromagnet. Suppressing the effective gyrotropic force by tuning the angular momentum compensation leads to a more than 10 times enhanced diffusion coefficient compared to that of ferromagnetic skyrmions. Consequently, our findings not only demonstrate the gyro-force dependence of the diffusion coefficient but also enable ultimately energy-efficient unconventional stochastic computing. },

Hexagonal rare-earth manganese oxide YMnO3 thin films were prepared on yttria-stabilized zirconia (111) substrates by metal organic decomposition method. The crystallinity and morphology of YMnO3 thin films crystallized at various temperatures were examined by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements, respectively. Single phase YMnO3 was obtained for the sample prepared by annealing temperatures of 950 °C. AFM analysis revealed that a smooth surface with a roughness of 0.15 nm was achieved for YMnO3 thin film annealed at 950 °C and 1000 °C, while three-dimensional growth for other samples prepared at 750–900 °C, 1050 °C, and 1100 °C. A narrow band at 1.6 eV and a broad band at 5 eV due to electronic transitions in the manganese and oxygen bands were observed in an absorption spectrum. },

abstract = {Abstract A key issue for skyrmion dynamics and devices are pinning effects present in real systems. While posing a challenge for the realization of conventional skyrmionics devices, exploiting pinning effects can enable non-conventional computing approaches if the details of the pinning in real samples are quantified and understood. We demonstrate that using thermal skyrmion dynamics, we can characterize the pinning of a sample and we ascertain the spatially resolved energy landscape. To understand the mechanism of the pinning, we probe the strong skyrmion size and shape dependence of the pinning. Magnetic microscopy imaging demonstrates that in contrast to findings in previous investigations, for large skyrmions the pinning originates at the skyrmion boundary and not at its core. The boundary pinning is strongly influenced by the very complex pinning energy landscape that goes beyond the conventional effective rigid quasi-particle description. This gives rise to complex skyrmion shape distortions and allows for dynamic switching of pinning sites and flexible tuning of the pinning. },

abstract = {Abstract Dielectric Mie nanoresonators showing strong light–matter interaction at the nanoscale may enable new functionality in photonic devices, such as strong magneto-optical effects. However, most reports so far have been focused on the enhancement of conventional magneto-optical effects. Here, anomalous magneto-optical effects are observed in high-index-contrast Si/Ce:YIG/YIG/SiO2 Mie resonators. In particular, giant modulation of light intensity in transverse magnetic configuration up to 6.4% under s-polarized incidence appears, which is non-existent in planar magneto-optical thin films. A large rotation of transmitted light polarization in longitudinal magnetic configuration is also observed, which is two orders of magnitude higher than for planar magneto-optical thin films. These phenomena are originated from the unique circular displacement current when exciting magnetic resonances in the Mie resonators, which change the electric field direction locally. This work indicates an uncharted territory of light polarization control based on complex modal profiles in all-dielectric magneto-optical Mie resonators and metasurfaces.},

abstract = {Despite belonging to a well-studied family of transition metal trihalides, VI3 has received significant attention only recently. As a hard ferromagnetic van der Waals compound with a large coercivity, it attracted much attention because of its potential use in atomically thin spintronic and optoelectronic devices. However, practical exploration of VI3 is challenging due to its instability under ambient conditions. Here, we present a comprehensive set of optical, x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and ellipsometric measurements of VI3 and demonstrate that, similarly to the related van der Waals ferromagnet CrI3, the degradation process is accelerated by the presence of moisture. The VI3 surface was covered by selected media commonly used in physical measurements to test its stability and lower the degradation rate three times or higher, providing practical information for experimentalists interested. The decomposition study at ambient conditions shows that the VI3 single crystal can be used for most of the bulk, magnetization, and optical measurements without any noticeable change of physical properties, as the significant degradation appears first after ∼2 h of exposition as illustrated, e.g., by the evolution of the ferromagnetic T1 and T2 transitions. The ellipsometric measurement demonstrates that even the surface remains optically stable for at least 5 min.},

We have examined a set of samples, all in the inverted regime of electronic bands, with the tin composition varying from x = 0.2 to 0.33. Our analysis shows that the observed response, composed of a series of interband inter-Landau-level excitations, can be interpreted and modeled using the relativistic-like Hamiltonian for three-dimensional massive Dirac electrons, expanded to include diagonal quadratic terms that impose band inversion. In our data, we have not found any clear signature of massless electron states that are present on the surface of Pb 1−x Sn x Se crystals in the inverted regime. Reasons for this unexpected result are discussed.},

Obtained data in terms of complex refractive index and reflectivity represent an extension of previous studies towards the ultraviolet spectral region and provide a background for the design of a variety of optical applications such as laser host matrix systems, doped luminescence materials, optical imaging devices for semiconductor immersion lithography, construction of scintillators and other devices operating in the ultraviolet spectral region. abstract = {The diffusion of particles has wide repercussions, ranging from particle-based soft-matter systems to solid-state systems with particular electronic properties. Recently, in the field of magnetism, the diffusion of magnetic skyrmions, topologically stabilized quasiparticles, has been demonstrated. Here, we show that, by applying a magnetic in-plane field, and therefore, breaking the symmetry of the system, skyrmion diffusion becomes anisotropic, with faster diffusion parallel to the field axis and slower diffusion perpendicular to it. We furthermore show that the absolute value of the applied magnetic in-plane field controls the absolute values of the diffusion coefficients, so that one can thereby tune both the orientation of the diffusion and its strength. Based on the stochastic Thiele equation, we can explain the observed anisotropic diffusion as a result of the elliptical deformation of the skyrmions by the application of the in-plane field.},

abstract = {The Heusler compound Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 is an interesting material for spintronic applications due to its predicted half-metal ferromagnetic character with a large band gap in the minority states. In this work, we present the optical and magneto-optical properties of a Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 bulk sample at room temperature. The spectral permittivity is found to be dominated by an absorption peak at 1.4 eV, originating mostly from absorptions by minority electrons. The best agreement between the experimentally obtained spectral permittivity tensor and the ab initio calculated one is for the local density approximation potential, closely followed by the generalized gradient approximation potential. However, the half-metallic ferromagnet character with 100% spin polarization is preserved only in calculations employing the Coulomb interaction correction (+U). This suggests that Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 is probably not a half metal as a single minority d-band dips below the Fermi level.},

Only four compounds Fe2MnSn, Fe2NiSi, Fe2NiGe, and Fe3Ga were homogeneous single phase. None of the studied Fe-based materials exhibited the predicted tetragonal structure. Magnetic measurements confirmed that all investigated compounds are soft ferromagnets with no sign of a structural transition. Our results contradict the ab-initio calculations showing the limits of theoretical predictions by incomplete high throughput calculations as well as the limitations of the standard synthesis techniques.},

abstract = {Spectral ellipsometry is a useful technique allowing fast, nondestructive, and contactless characterization of thin films and constituent materials. In this Letter, we show that both the linear magneto-optic Kerr effect (LinMOKE, proportional to the magnetization M) and the quadratic MOKE (QMOKE, proportional to M 2) can be a useful extension of spectral ellipsometry and are able to sense the crystallographic ordering of Heusler compounds. This is demonstrated for the Heusler compound Co2MnSi, which has a crystallographic transition from a B2 to an L21 structure with increasing annealing temperature Ta. We investigated a set of Co2MnSi thin films deposited on MgO(001) substrates and annealed from 300 to 500 °C. The amplitude of LinMOKE and QMOKE spectra, detected in the extended visible spectral range of 0.8-5.5 eV, scales linearly with Ta, and this effect is pronounced at the resonant peaks of the QMOKE spectra below 2.0 eV. Furthermore, the spectra of the magneto-optic (MO) parameters, which fully describe the MO response of Co2MnSi up to the second order in M, are obtained depending on Ta. Finally, the spectra are compared with ab initio calculations of a purely L21-ordered Co2MnSi Heusler compound.},

abstract = {Fe2MnSn compound was prepared in the form of polycrystalline ingot by arc-melting. In contrast to the theoretical predictions of stable tetragonal Heusler compound, the material crystallizes in a hexagonal DO19 crystal structure and orders ferromagnetically below TC = 586(10) K that is only about half of the calculated value of 1012 K. Magnetic moment 5.87 $mu$B at 10 K is less or about in line with various theoretical predictions. However, electrical resistivity and optical studies reveal no signs of half-metallic behavior predicted theoretically. The change in the slope of the MOKE spectra below 1.5 eV suggests the main influence of a low energy inter-band transition which points to the loss of half-metallicity in agreement with resistivity and optical measurements.},

abstract = {The Fourier modal method for grating diffraction calculations is reformulated to improve its numerical performance, which is then studied on a rectangular aluminium grating. The Fourier coefficients of the rectangular permittivity function are calculated by the discrete Fourier transform from equidistant sample points rather than from the Fourier integral, which partially suppresses the Gibbs phenomenon. The continuous field components are treated in the Fourier space analogously to the conventional algorithm, whereas the discontinuous components are calculated in the direct space. The lateral component of the electric field, which is discontinuous inside the periodic medium but continuous on horizontal interfaces, is used for the boundary conditions in the direct space, which improves the convergence of diffraction efficiencies and considerably suppresses field fluctuations in the vicinity of sharp corners.},

abstract = {Fe75−xMn25Gax Heusler-like compounds were investigated in a wide range of Fe/Ga ratios while keeping the Mn content constant and equal 25 at% in order to elucidate the interplay between magnetic properties and composition. Materials were prepared by arc-melting from pure elements and subsequently annealed. Experimental investigations were focused on magnetization behavior in a wide temperature range from 4 to 1000 K and magnetic field up to 9 T. Optical and magneto-optical (MO) measurements were employed to shed more light on the magnetic state and electronic structure of investigated materials. Magnetization measurements indicated that in the vicinity of stoichiometry (Fe2MnGa) the compounds are ferro/ferrimagnetic, whereas the Fe-deficient compound is paramagnetic and at high Fe concentration the antiferromagnetic interaction prevails. Theoretical calculations of corresponding ordered and disordered stoichiometric compounds were carried out and compared to the experiment on the level of net magnetic moment as well as magneto-optical spectra. This comparison suggests that the Heusler crystal structure, L21, is not present even close to stoichiometry. Moreover, the comparison of density of states (DOS) for ordered and disordered structures allowed us to explain missing martensitic transformation (MT) in investigated materials.},

abstract = {Influence of substrate miscut on magnetization dynamics in SrRuO3 (SRO) thin films was studied. Two films were grown on SrTiO3 substrates with high (∼ 1°) and low (∼ 0.1°) miscut angles, respectively. As expected, high miscut angle leads to suppression of multi-variant growth. By means of SQUID magnetometry, comparable relaxation effects were observed in both the multi-variant and the nearly single-variant sample. Differences in the magnetization reversal process were revealed by magnetic force microscopy. It showed that the multi-variant growth leads to higher density of defects acting as pinning or nucleation sites for magnetic domains, which consequently results in deterioration of magnetic properties. It was demonstrated that the use of high miscut substrate is important for fabrication of high quality SRO thin films with low density of crystallographic defects and excellent magnetic properties.},

abstract = {Unlike ferromagnetic materials, ferrimagnetic metals have recently received considerable attention due to their bulk perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, low net magnetization and tunable magnetic properties. This makes them perfect candidates for the research of recently discovered spin-torque related phenomena. Among other ferrimagnetic metals, GdFe has an advantage in relatively large magnetic moments in both sublattices and tunability of compensation point above the room temperature by small changes in its composition. We present a systematic study of optical and magneto-optical properties of amorphous GdxFe(100-x) thin films of various compositions (x = 18.3, 20.0, 24.7, 26.7) prepared by DC sputtering on thermally oxidized SiO2 substrates. A combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 5.5 eV with advanced theoretical models allowed us to deduce the spectral dependence of complete permittivity tensors across the compensation point. Such information is important for further optical detection of spin related phenomena driven by vicinity of compensation point in nanostructures containing GdFe.},

abstract = {Magnetic skyrmions in thin films can be efficiently displaced with high speed by using spin-transfer torques 1,2 and spin–orbit torques 3–5 at low current densities. Although this favourable combination of properties has raised expectations for using skyrmions in devices 6,7 , only a few publications have studied the thermal effects on the skyrmion dynamics 8–10 . However, thermally induced skyrmion dynamics can be used for applications 11 such as unconventional computing approaches 12 , as they have been predicted to be useful for probabilistic computing devices 13 . In our work, we uncover thermal diffusive skyrmion dynamics by a combined experimental and numerical study. We probed the dynamics of magnetic skyrmions in a specially tailored low-pinning multilayer material. The observed thermally excited skyrmion motion dominates the dynamics. Analysing the diffusion as a function of temperature, we found an exponential dependence, which we confirmed by means of numerical simulations. The diffusion of skyrmions was further used in a signal reshuffling device as part of a skyrmion-based probabilistic computing architecture. Owing to its inherent two-dimensional texture, the observation of a diffusive motion of skyrmions in thin-film systems may also yield insights in soft-matter-like characteristics (for example, studies of fluctuation theorems, thermally induced roughening and so on), which thus makes it highly desirable to realize and study thermal effects in experimentally accessible skyrmion systems.},

abstract = {Influence of epitaxial strain and oxygen octahedra rotations on electronic structure of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 ultrathin films was systematically studied. The investigated films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on four different substrates: cubic (001)-oriented LaAlO3, (001) (LaAlO3)1/3(Sr2AlTaO6)2/3, (001) SrTiO3, and orthorhombic (110) DyScO3, providing a broad range of induced epitaxial strains. Magnetic properties were found to deteriorate with increasing value of the epitaxial strain, as expected due to unit cell distortion increasingly deviating from the bulk and effect of the magnetically inert layer. A combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy was used to determine spectra of the diagonal and off-diagonal elements of permittivity tensor. The off-diagonal elements at room temperature confirmed the presence of two previously reported electronic transitions in the spectra of all films. Moreover they revealed another electronic transition around 4.3 eV only in the spectra of films grown under compressive strain. We proposed classification of this transition as a crystal field paramagnetic Mn t2g→eg transition. Ab initio calculations were employed to distinguish between the potential influence of oxygen octahedra rotations and distortions. The ab initio calculations indicated a negligible influence of oxygen octahedra rotations on magneto-optical properties of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3. They further supported the proposed classification of the additional electronic transition, showing a key role of strain in controlling the electronic structure of ultrathin perovskite films.},

A [100] oriented Ni 2 MnGa single crystal exhibiting MIR was successfully prepared using the floating-zone technique with a high speed of 80 mm/h. The comparison with a sample grown by Bridgman method and a reference sample grown in AdaptaMat Ltd. by directional solidification is provided based on elemental homogeneity, crystallographic quality by x-ray diffraction, transformation behaviour and magnetic properties. All these methods indicated that the single crystal grown by floating zone with high speed is comparable or superior to the samples prepared by other methods. Importantly, the magnetization measurement revealed that the single crystal prepared this way exhibits MIR down to 10 K.},

abstract = {The magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) is a well known and handy tool to characterize ferro-, ferri-, and antiferromagnetic materials. Many of the MOKE techniques employ effects solely linear in magnetization M. Nevertheless, a higher-order term being proportional to M 2 and called quadratic MOKE (QMOKE) can additionally contribute to the experimental data. Here, we present detailed QMOKE spectroscopy measurements in the range of 0.8-5.5 eV based on a modified eight-directional method applied on ferromagnetic bcc Fe thin films grown on MgO substrates. From the measured QMOKE spectra, two further complex spectra of the QMOKE parameters G s and 2G 44 are yielded. The difference between those two parameters, known as G, denotes the strength of the QMOKE anisotropy. Those QMOKE parameters give rise to the QMOKE tensor G, fully describing the perturbation of the permittivity tensor in the second order in M for cubic crystal structures. We further present experimental measurements of ellipsometry and linear MOKE spectra, wherefrom permittivity in the zeroth and the first order in M are obtained, respectively. Finally, all those spectra are described by ab initio calculations.},

The electronic structure is calculated with various numbers of k-points in the full Brillouin zone and the convergence of the calculated data is being studied. Two exchange-correlation potentials are employed, namely LDA and GGA, and their effect on the outcoming spectra is shown. The permittivity tensor is obtained from the electronic structure by the Kubo formula. abstract = {Rare-earth iron garnet thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have recently attracted a great deal of attention for spintronic applications. Thulium iron garnet (TmIG) has been successfully grown and TmIG/Pt heterostructures have been characterized. However, TmIG is not the only rare-earth iron garnet that can be grown with PMA. We report the growth, magnetic, and spintronic properties of epitaxial terbium iron garnet (TbIG) and europium iron garnet (EuIG) thin films with PMA. Reciprocal space mapping shows the films are lattice matched to the substrate without strain relaxation, even for films up to 56 nm thick. The lattice strain and magnetostriction coefficient produce PMA in certain cases. TbIG grows on (111) gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) with PMA due to the in-plane compressive strain, whereas TbIG on (111) substituted GGG (SGGG) is in tension and has an in-plane easy axis. EuIG grows with PMA on (100) and (111) GGG substrates, which facilitates the investigation of spintronic properties as a function of orientation. Both garnets have excess rare earth, which is believed to occupy Fe octahedral sites and in the case of TbIG is associated with an increase in the compensation temperature to 330 K, higher than the bulk value. Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) measurements of Pt/EuIG Hall crosses show that the spin mixing conductance of Pt/ (111) and (100) EuIG is similar. AHE measurements of Pt/TbIG Hall crosses reveal a sign change in the AHE amplitude at the compensation point analogous to all-metallic systems.},

Nevertheless, a higher-order term being proportional to M2 and called quadratic MOKE (QMOKE) can additionally contribute to experimental data. Handling and understanding the underlying origin of QMOKE could be the key to utilize this effect for investigation of antiferromagnetic materials in the future due to their vanishing first order MOKE contribution. Also, better understanding of QMOKE and hence better understanding of magnetooptic (MO) effects in general is very valuable, as the MO effect is very much employed in research of ferro- and ferrimagnetic materials. Therefore, we present our QMOKE and longitudinal MOKE spectroscopy setup with a spectral range of 0.8–5.5 eV. The setup is based on light modulation through a photoelastic modulator and detection of second-harmonic intensity by a lock-in amplifier. To measure the Kerr ellipticity an achromatic compensator is used within the setup, whereas without it Kerr rotation is measured. The separation of QMOKE spectra directly from the measured data is based on measurements with multiple magnetization directions. So far the QMOKE separation algorithm is developed and tested for but not limited to cubic (001) oriented samples. The QMOKE spectra yielded by our setup arise from two quadratic MO parameters Gs and 2G44, being elements of quadratic MO tensor G, which describes perturbation of the permittivity tensor in the second order in M.},

abstract = {The tetragonal phase of CuMnAs progressively appears as one of the key materials for antiferromagnetic spintronics due to efficient current-induced spin-torques whose existence can be directly inferred from crystal symmetry. Theoretical understanding of spintronic phenomena in this material, however, relies on the detailed knowledge of electronic structure (band structure and corresponding wave functions) which has so far been tested only to a limited extent. We show that AC permittivity (obtained from ellipsometry) and UV photoelectron spectra agree with density functional calculations. Together with the x-ray diffraction and precession electron diffraction tomography, our analysis confirms recent theoretical claim [Phys. Rev. abstract = {Silver nanorod arrays prepared by oblique angle deposition (AgOADs) represent versatile, simple and inexpensive substrates for high sensitivity surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. Their anisotropic nature suggests that their optical responses such as the SERS signal, the depolarization ratio, reflectivity and ellipsometric parameters critically depend on the states of polarization, nanorod angular arrangement and specific illumination-observation geometry. SERS polarization and angular dependences of AgOADs were measured using methylene blue (MB) molecule. Our study constitutes, to our knowledge, the most detailed investigation of such characteristics of plasmonic nanostructures to date. This is due to the 90°-scattering geometry used in which two out of three Euler angles determining the nanorod spatial orientation and four polarization combinations can be varied simultaneously. We attributed the anisotropic optical response to anisotropic (pseudo)refractive index caused by different periodicity of our structures in different directions since the plasmonic properties were found rather isotropic. For the first time we demonstrate very good correspondence between SERS intensities and ellipsometric parameters for all measured configurations as compared on the basis of the surface selection rules. Obtained results enable quantitative analysis of MB Raman tensor elements, indicating that the molecules adsorb predominantly with the symmetry axis perpendicular to the surface.},

abstract = {We report fast and efficient current-induced switching of a perpendicular anisotropy magnetic insulator thulium iron garnet by using spin-orbit torques (SOT) from the Pt overlayer. We first show that, with quasi-DC (10 ms) current pulses, SOT-induced switching can be achieved with an external field as low as 2 Oe, making TmIG an outstanding candidate to realize efficient switching in heterostructures that produce moderate stray fields without requiring an external field. We then demonstrate deterministic switching with fast current pulses (≤20 ns) with an amplitude of ∼1012 A/m2, similar to all-metallic structures. We reveal that, in the presence of an initially nucleated domain, the critical switching current is reduced by up to a factor of five with respect to the fully saturated initial state, implying efficient current-driven domain wall motion in this system. Based on measurements with 2 ns-long pulses, we estimate the domain wall velocity of the order of ∼400 m/s per j = 1012 A/m2.},

So far, the reported Faraday rotation of polycrystalline Ce:YIG thin films on silicon is much lower than that of their single crystal or epitaxial thin film counterparts, limiting the magneto-optical figure of merit, device bandwidth and fabrication tolerance. In this paper, we report the growth of Ce:YIG thin films on silicon from targets with high Ce concentration up to nominally Y1.5Ce1.5Fe5O12by pulsed laser deposition. The polycrystalline Y1.5Ce1.5Fe5O12thin film showed pure garnet phase, smooth surface roughness of 0.7 nm, a dominant Ce3+valence state and a bulk-like saturation magnetization of 125 emu/cm3at room temperature. This material shows high Faraday rotation of −6410 deg/cm at 1550 nm wavelength, exceeding that of an Y2Ce1Fe5O12epitaxial thin film on a GGG (100) substrate. However higher loss and lower figure of merit is also observed at 1550 nm wavelength compared to Y2Ce1Fe5O12thin films, possibly due to the low oxygen partial pressure during fabrication. Low deposition oxygen partial pressure is essential to enhance the Ce solubility and Ce3+concentration, which results in large Faraday rotation.},

abstract = {Bismuth selenide - the prominent topological insulator - has been recently reported as a material exhibiting an extraordinary strong Faraday rotation. This effect has been identified as due to interband excitations in bulk promoting electrons from the valence to the conduction band, in which the electron gas is partially spin-polarized due to the Zeeman effect. In this work, we test the Faraday rotation in Bi 2 Se 3 in high magnetic fields, when the conduction band electrons reach their full spin polarization. We find that the Faraday angle becomes in this regime almost independent of the applied magnetic field. This contrasts with the Faraday effect observed in this system at low magnetic fields, where the Faraday angle scales linearly with B and may thus be described by a conventional Verdet law.},

To study the influence of the surface oxidization, the samples were prepared with and without Au capping layer. Spectral dependence of the complete permittivity tensor was derived from experimental data in a broad spectral range covering IR, visible and UV regions. All samples exhibited metallic-like optical and magneto-optical properties with clear differences in 10 nm thick bare sample. These differences to overall optical and magneto-optical properties of nanometer-thick permalloy layers were ascribed to a strong influence of the surface oxide.},

abstract = {We provide unified phenomenological description of magnetooptic effects being linear and quadratic in magnetization. The description is based on few principal spectra, describing elements of permittivity tensor up to the second order in magnetization. Each permittivity tensor element for any magnetization direction and any sample surface orientation is simply determined by weighted summation of the principal spectra, where weights are given by crystallographic and magnetization orientations. The number of principal spectra depends on the symmetry of the crystal. In cubic crystals owning point symmetry we need only four principal spectra. Here, the principal spectra are expressed by ab initio calculations for bcc Fe, fcc Co and fcc Ni in optical range as well as in hard and soft x-ray energy range, i.e. at the 2p- and 3p-edges. We also express principal spectra analytically using modified Kubo formula.},

abstract = {The efficiency of magneto-optical (MO) diffraction in GdFe stripe arrays with alternating directions of perpendicular magnetization is investigated. The diffraction efficiency depends on the aperture ratio, as theoretically analyzed for an array composed of magnetic and nonmagnetic materials, with the magnetization directions parallel or antiparallel. The stripe patterns are composed of two ferromagnetic alloys of different compositions, Gd19.7Fe80.3 and Gd23.4Fe76.6 (denoted GF1 and GF2), having different coercivities in the parallel and antiparallel configurations. The stripe patterns are separated by nonmagnetic SiO2 stripes of different widths to obtain aperture ratios of 100, 75, 50 and 25%. The magnetization distributions in the samples is confirmed by MO microscopy. The diffraction efficiencies at a wavelength of 532nm are measured to be 1.27×10–6, 1.04×10–6, 6.2×10–7 and 2.0×10–7 for aperture ratios of 100, 75, 50, and 25%, respectively. Those values are in accord with calculations using the measured MO and optical parameters of the GF1 layer, including the Kerr rotation angle of 0.12°, the Kerr ellipticity of −0.1° and the reflectance of 0.37.},

abstract = {In this work, we present a systematic study of optical and magneto-optical properties of Y3-xBixFe5O12 thin films with various Bi concentrations (x = 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3) prepared by Metal Organic Decomposition on Gd3Ga5O12 (100) substrates. We used magneto-optical spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Spectral dependence of complex refraction indexes obtained from ellipsometric measurements revealed increasing optical absorption with increasing Bi concentrations. Faraday and Kerr magneto-optical spectra measured in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 5.5 eV clearly demonstrated that the increasing Bi concentration enhances the spin-orbit coupling and influences the magnetooptical effect. Using the magneto-optical and ellipsometric experimental data we deduced a spectral dependence of complete permittivity tensor in a wide spectral range. Comparison of obtained results with the results reported on Liquid Phase Epitaxy bulk-like garnets with small Bi concentrations showed agreement and confirmed a high optical and magneto-optical quality of investigated films.},

abstract = {The Faraday effect is a representative magneto-optical phenomenon, resulting from the transfer of angular momentum between interacting light and matter in which time-reversal symmetry has been broken by an externally applied magnetic field. Here we report on the Faraday rotation induced in the prominent 3D topological insulator Bi2Se3 due to bulk interband excitations. The origin of this non-resonant effect, extraordinarily strong among other non-magnetic materials, is traced back to the specific Dirac-type Hamiltonian for Bi2Se3, which implies that electrons and holes in this material closely resemble relativistic particles with a non-zero rest mass.},

abstract = {Optical and magneto-optical properties of amorphous Gd22Fe78 (GdFe) thin films prepared by direct current (DC) sputtering on thermally oxidized substrates were characterized by the combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy in the photon energy range from 1.5 to 5.5 eV. Thin SiNx and Ru coatings were used to prevent the GdFe surface oxidation and contamination. Using advanced theoretical models spectral dependence of the complete permittivity tensor and spectral dependence of the absorption coefficient were deduced from experimental data. No significant changes in the optical properties upon different coatings were observed, indicating reliability of used analysis.},
